The Church of England Calls on Mining Companies to Ensure Dam Safety Following the Disaster in Brumadinho, Brazil

Episcopalians in Brazil have responded with joy to the news that a coalition including the Church of England Pensions Board and the Church Commissioners for England, issued a joint call last month for a “global independent public classification system” for mining companies’ tailings dams, following the collapse of the Vale dam in Brumadinho, Brazil.

At a recent meeting of APJN members Bishop Francisco de Silva raised the issue of the neglect of such dams in the pursuit of profit. He called for justice for people and concern for the environment. He welcomed the news of action by the powerful Church of England Institutions saying:

This is a fantastic initiative. The more effective way in advocacy is to act with financial strategy. The only way that investors feel fearful is to link their profit to the correctness in terms of environment and justice.
